Students will have the opportunity to 'shake science out of the box' in a fun-packed project in Funtington.

Dr Paul Strickland, from The Time Machine, said: "How things work and why, is at the very heart of what drives us all to use the little grey cells and make sense of all we see and experience."

He added: "The RECLAIM FUN programme is all about reclaiming fun in science and mechanics. We are trying to shake the science out of the box and to give young people a different way of looking at the ideas of re-use and recycle of reuse. They will be able to look at small interesting items and take them apart. We will then go on a journey of discovery to find out what the bits in the box do, why the box became redundant, what would be good to put in a new box (product), how much stuff goes into the box and how hard it is to recycle."

This simple journey is aimed at encouraging young people to go on a bigger journey of discovery and open up new ideas and career possibilities to them. It is hoped to show or give:

•the importance of science and engineering, appreciation of what goes into making a box. The value of careers in science and engineering
•appreciation of the box, that it can be repaired or bits of it can be reused. The project will highlight that throwing something away can be a waste of an opportunity to do something else with the item. If you keep using it, you can still do what you want and still have money to do other things. Young people will be encouraged to put their own creativity into the item and 'retro or steam punk it', or even repair it. They will be able to design a cover that takes it into the year 3010, not 2010
•a chance to learn about how the technology works, why it went wrong and what to look for in new systems. This is aimed at helping students make more valued purchases in the future
•an understanding of the considerable work that goes into creating and producing a product, recycling it and the landfill effect. At the end of every transforming session, the bits that are not used will go into special bins for recycling and other outlets will be sought where possible for the reuse of whole units.

The RECLAIM FUN project has two levels: the Transforming Tinkering Academy is aimed at children upto the age of 12 and the Its Time Academy at older students.

The programme is in need of a variety of items for young people to use including tracks from old railway sets to show the concept of orbits.

Paul said: "We have a high turnover of young people at the centre and they need lots of boxes to break open and explore. How can you help? Get rid of the clutter, don't take it to the dump, let us digest it and we will then give it to recycle agents, all sorted, Simple!"

Items needed for the project include:

•old video cameras, broken digital or out of fashion cameras
•metal detectors
•old alarm systems
•old cctv security systems (not the VDU monitors please)
•old battery powered tools, they are after anything which has a small motor
•old mechanical cameras and cinematic film projectors
•old record players
•old clocks and wind up mechanisms
•quartz clock movements

Insulation, heating and fire alrm system

We are putting tenders out for reviews of the above. They are the three main issues with the centre that need to be resolved.

The wood burner we had in T-Time area was too small, we have put another one on test to see what it can do.

If you have a domestic house and need a wood burner we have one available.

Bean Bags, Tables and Chairs

We are desparate for Bean Bags, about 20 of them. These will be used to sit on and model systems. We will sew large panels on them, with ways of linking them together. When they are not used for this they will be used for seats. About 20 would be good, but even if you have 1 un-wanted bean bag, would be interested. Every little helps.

Looking for more benches to do the 'transforming tinkering', collapsable or stackable ones would be good. Have to be strong, as will be using as work benches, to shake the science out of the box.

Current contacting corportaions for sponsorship. We need to set up 20 'transforming tinkering tool box's'. We would hope that these will also be on sale for wider tinkering at home. B&Q and Tesco will be contacted locally.

We are please to lauch the 'shaking the science out of the box' blog. This allows young people to look inside products, hi-fi, photgraphic, scientific, engineering equipment.

We also assess strengths and weakness's of products and how easy they are to recycle.

For this to be sucessful we NEED interesting items to take apart, explore and recycle. Please go to the blog and see if you can help, you get rid of clutter, it does not get land filled, we enrich young peoples understanding of technology and it gets re-used or recycled.

Home Based learning Blog

New home base learning blog formed. A facebook or Yahoo group will be formed after consultation with home based learning groups. This will allow you to share with us what you want to have provided and how it may be provided.

The major problem with home based learning is the finance in resourcing all the facilities that you would expect to get from a traditional school or college. These would simply be too expensive to have in the home, in terms of the room it would take up and the finance.

The flexibility we have is that we can run with low student group sizes. This means the resources and the flexability is her to deliver science, maths and engineering, that enriches your childs experience and understanding.

The TimeMachineFun centre provides these resources which you can book as an individual, or as a group of home based learners.

Extreme Warning: This article we think is written in English!

Well 'the shaking the science and goodness out of the box' has embarked from the departure lounge. What is this project about, well it is to get interesting items and to open up the box and explore them.

Why do it, to show you the effort (science and Engineering) in the box, why the box was not wanted any more, what to look for in the new box, how much stuff is in the box, some of this can be re-used, repaired (for use in other countries) or re-cycled. If the latter all items get sorted and weighed to show you the amount that can be recycled and the effort to do this.

What are we looking for, in general small interesting items (the box) that can be explored.

Portable hi-fi systems
Vintage stuff
Old clocks, including quartz movements
Hand held video cameras
Mechanical old cameras
Old security systems including detectors and camera

We are currently desperate for old electric train sets and Selectric's, to show mass in motion experiments.

Larger single items will be considered, as they can be 'digested' in a group setting.

All the waste is then sorted and put in special bins for re-cycling.

To put some science into the process we need also measurement equipment, timers, frequency counters, sensors and transducers. Even digital bathroom scales can be use.

So before you bin it, think of the educational value it has. We want to show the next generation whats in the box, what to look for when buying the box and the ecological implication of buying and using the box.

Powerful stuff, let the process begin. We are also looking for small tools, like screw drivers and the such, cutters and pillars. We have enough thumper hammers thanks, we hope to carefully disassemble the box, building up concentration, hand skills and possible careers in manufacture as well.

Is there no end to this project, no limits, you mission, if you wish to risk it, is make it happen, this message will implode in 10 minutes, stand back its going to make a mess.

Model Railway Track

We are desparate for railway track and old sets. In two weeks time we will be showing the effect of moving the pendulum with different motions. We hope to control them so they go into different modes of behavour.

First at differt speeds, showing inertia and momentum, the two biggies
Then different accellerations
Round the bend and circular motion, making them come of the track
Back and forward to get to go into oscillation.

We will also hopefully be able to rig up the Video gear to show the relative frames and all.

Then we move onto multitrack systems, multi linked pendulums, how to get an inverted pendulum to behave.

All we need is your old unwanted model railway kits, dusty, never used, but full of potential.

Hampshire County Council

On the long route to setting the centre up, we have been collaborating with Hampshire County Council. Last week we made a huge step forward and we thank the staff of HCC. The 'shaking the science out of the box', soon operational.

We plan to use this as part of 'whats in the box' program. This also includes the environmental awareness of whats in the box, the effort in making the box, using it and environmental impact on repair, reuse and recycleing the box.

We will sort the recycled tinkered box's and make use and punk the rest.

We have put a list of items that are required. These include:

Telescopes
Microscopes
Remote controlled items (working or not)
Motors out of products, small ones including stepper motors
Arrays of leds, all those ones where the battery gave up.
Timers out of products
Metal detectors
Sensors, transducers and meters
Avo's, multimeters, digital thermometers, scales
Cameras, still and video
Old fashioned mechanical items like clocks and cameras
Scientific equipment
Battery opoerated power tools (where motor still working)

Larger items may be considered.

rare Clocking in machine and Barometer

We have just been given a rare clockingin machine and a barometer for the project. Much appreciated.

We have been imformed that we are also to have given, loads of spares from old water meters. This all helps.

If that was not good enough for a week, we are being given box's of clock movements. These will be used a a 'library facility', where West Dean College students can practice on, or for projects with young people to experiment and form projects from.

We are also going to build up a library of model engineering remote control devices and telescopes.

We hope to facilitate both aspects. That of making and using models and also going out and having the oppertunity to go with an expert and look at the ski at night.

Finally the tree came tumbleing down

County Councillor Mrs. M.L. GOLDSMITH has been contacted, we realised that we to date have had no communications with here. We tried to contact her through wscc website, but the contact page seems to be faulty.

We hope to invite her and district council down to the centre and see the progress of the voluntary group.

Also the amount of work left.

The project went to the expense of public consultation events, these where closed for two weeks because of the root removal near the building. If you wish to view the centre please phone 01243 576890.

The project plans to fully open, three years from Jan 2009, that will be Jan 2011. With the problems experience and the project put on hold for nearly 6 months now, that date might need reflections upon.

Site Office Issue

We have resolved the problem of the site office. This 'un-nessary evil' was placed not at the start of the project but when full planning permission was granted. The systematic harassment it has caused you would not believe.

Needless to say, a compromise has been reached with the assistance of Julie Tassell. Could communication skills always sees through.

Second Pitler Lathe for the Project centre

Well busy day and thanks from all of the help today. We collected the second pitler lathe for the project centre. Its the smaller model that will complement the 'C' model we have. These will form part of the synchronisation displays for the clocktrust centre. Here the synchronisation of the axis will allow us to demostate early programming.

On to the restoration of this fine lathe, which shows the full innovation of the Victorian age. We are still looking to purchase a fancy wood turning lathe from an earlier age, to complement the machine synchronisation displays.

Project Centre

For those that have been involved, think we are getting close to finding a suitable project centre. We broadened the scope of this when the old one, the coffin house was sold. The building is sadly missed, but with these funds and some I should have had 10 years ago, if there was a just God, I think we are in a very positive position.

It still needs all of the contacts of the members to be explored. If you know anybody in a council, water board, gas or electricity utility or church or anybody else that we can contact, please make it happen, get the right people talking. The struggle we have had is finding one that wont get residential planning permission.

Slotting machine given new life

This was a recent machine we saw on the internet, a slotting machine, we bought one for the centre and sadly found out later that had missing and broken parts. With the joy of the internet we have now been able to set upon the repair of this fine machine, together with the pitler lathe and the schaublin milling machine.

Its so nice to work with machines made to last and easy to repair.

Collaboration with chichester

Chance glance at people emptying store rooms in chichester and we are tomorrow taking the stuff out of the skip and into projects. We have been collaborating with a Southampton Charity, that re-uses, for children projects. We will also be developing a database for people to say what they are looking for their projects, so when we are given oppertunities we can activate 'the matrix of oppertunities'. Its important that all voluntary organisations declare what they are looking for. We started this with the swhag spitfire project and now wish to extend this pilot study to cover all the projects we are involved with.

We tried to collaborate with an internet en-physco-pedia, what a trial that was. You enter synchronome in it and you get GPO master clocks, not the famous gravity arm master clock. I dont often give up but the 'information police of this organisation' are as a blocked toilet. As discussed with group members, the stance, a scientific one, is to first define the base of the reference, i.e. individual/organisation and then to contribute information, which this particular internet based one is lacking for industrial heritage, electric, commercial and turret horology. They called this advertising and banned me. Saves a lot of effort, considering we are higher ranking them them. I dont like the 'class structure' that has started to creep into the internet, who dont reckognise out of ignorance. Would be interested in others comments on the matter and other 'open' projects.

Well grumble over, with 320 members and a further 80 members in the other groups, think we have done very well so far bringing like minded people together, what real soical networks are about and gives industrial heritage a future.

Onamission Project Centre

Well we have moved out of the coffin house, all empty and cleaned for the new owners. We have been extremely busy trying to find the site for the new project centre;

1) Report to torbay council concerning requirements.
2) Contacted Devon County Council to try and determine the property that will be disposed of.
3) Contacted the commission for disused churches
4) Contacted Hampshire County Council.

Also worked with South West Water.

If anybody has contacts with regard the disposal of churches, schools, industrial buildings, ex utility board property, please contact us. The funds are now in place for the project centre to be purchased and fitted with all the displays and working equipment we have.

The www.clocktrust.com goes live and direct link via the www.onamission.org.uk . This is the starting process to flesh out the project sites of onamission. The concept is to provide the structure, then correct contact, but for the detail to remain within the group sites. The purpose of all these sites is to inform people about what we do and to get them in contact with the right person, allow them to join in and the ability for people to contribute.

We are desparate for proof readers to correct the dyslexic english, also sound clips, video.... these are all the routes of communication between onamission and the world. Its frustrating at the moment that we cant truely reflect the energy and passion of the organisation and task tailor information presented. I am sure we will get there.
